Construction First Aid Training Courses
Construction sites are among the most hazardous working environments in the UK, with the HSE reporting thousands of injuries every year. Under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 and the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, employers have a legal duty to ensure adequate first aid provision on site including trained first aiders, appropriate equipment, and a clear emergency plan.
At Madeleys First Aid Plus, we deliver accredited first aid training for construction workers, site managers, contractors, and builders across the UK. Our courses are tailored to the real hazards of construction, from falls and crush injuries to mental health pressures, giving your workforce the skills to respond fast, stay compliant, and keep your site safe.

The Importance of First Aid Training Within the Building and Construction Industry?
The construction industry can greatly benefit from physical and mental first aid training provided by Madeleys First Aid Plus. Having the right training can make all the difference in responding to emergencies quickly and effectively.
High-Risk Work Environment First Aid
Construction involves working with heavy machinery, power tools, and in potentially hazardous conditions. Accidents and injuries can occur, ranging from minor cuts and burns to more severe incidents of falls, crush injuries, or electrical shock. Our first aid training course equips construction workers with the skills to respond promptly and appropriately to on-site emergencies, providing immediate care until professional help is available.
Physical Strain and Musculoskeletal Issues
Construction work is a physical occupation involving repetitive activities, lifting, and standing or working in stooped positions for extended periods. These situations may lead to musculoskeletal disorders such as back pain, strains, and repetitive strain injuries. Our courses are designed to educate supervisors and employees on proper body mechanics, ergonomics, and injury prevention techniques that can reduce the incidence of these kinds of injuries.
Mental Health Courses for the Construction Industry
Working within the construction industry can be a stressful and mentally demanding job. Long hours of work, tight deadlines, and high-pressure environments may cause mental illnesses such as stress, anxiety, and depression among workers. Mental health first aid training allows individuals to recognise symptoms of mental distress, provides methods of managing stress, and promotes early intervention and support.
Workplace Hazards and Safety Awareness
Construction sites are often found to have many safety hazards, including falling objects, electrical hazards, scaffolding collapse, and exposure to harmful chemicals. Physical first aid training educates workers about these hazards and allows them to take safety measures, respond to accidents or injuries, and avert potential risks.
Teamwork and Communication
Good communication and cooperation are crucial in the construction industry for efficient and safe work. Physical and mental first aid training promotes good communication skills, teamwork, and interpersonal support among workers, resulting in a good working environment and better overall job performance.
Substance Abuse and Addiction
The building industry has been proven to experience increased substance misuse and addiction compared to some other industries. Substance misuse also risks the individual's safety and others' safety on site. Mental health first aid training for construction workers can enable one to recognise signs of substance misuse, provide appropriate support, and refer to addiction services.
Work-Life Balance and Stress Management
Construction work may involve long hours, irregular schedules, and time away from home and personal life. It is essential to promote work-life balance and provide resources for stress management to prevent burnout and maintain overall well-being. Mental health first aid training offers strategies for stress management, improving work-life balance, and promoting self-care.

First Aid Requirements for Construction Sites
Q: Is first aid training a legal requirement on construction sites?
Yes. Under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, all employers, including those in construction, must provide adequate and appropriate first aid equipment, facilities and personnel. The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 further place responsibility on duty holders to ensure site safety, including first aid provision.
Q: How many first aiders does a construction site need?
The HSE recommends at least one trained first aider for every 50 workers on a low-risk site. For higher-risk construction environments, a First Aid at Work (FAW) qualified first aider is recommended for every 50 workers, with additional cover for larger or more complex sites.
Q: What is the difference between EFAW and FAW for construction workers?
Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) is a 1-day course covering basic emergency response, suitable for lower-risk sites or smaller teams. First Aid at Work (FAW) is a 3-day qualification covering a much broader range of injuries and conditions, and is the recommended standard for most construction sites.
Q: Can first aid training be delivered on our construction site?
Yes. Madeleys First Aid Plus can deliver training at your own venue or site, subject to suitable facilities and delegate numbers. This is often the most practical and cost-effective option for construction teams.
